I received a commission to paint a skateboarder on plexiglass. I had never worked with plexiglass before. The painting was to be hung on a concrete wall so it would appear to be sprayed graffiti. Brilliant idea! I also had no background as a sprayer. I built a large framework structure in my studio to hold the four acrylic sheets, each 1000×1000 mm, and got to work. Because I was working from behind the plexiglass (the colours are much more brilliant, and the surface remains protected) and was dealing with a lot of masking, I would have no idea what was happening with the painting until I was finished and took it down from the scaffolding. I was surprised and quite happy. Since then, I have done a number of large pieces. Recently, I have been combining plexiglass with compositions gold and epoxy resin. I have never been so excited.
Ich erhielt den Auftrag, einen Skateboarder auf Plexiglas zu malen. Ich hatte noch nie mit Plexiglas gearbeitet. Das Gemälde sollte an eine Betonwand gehängt werden, damit es wie gesprühtes Graffiti aussieht. Geniale Idee! Ich hatte auch keinen Hintergrund als Sprüher. Ich baute in meinem Atelier eine große Rahmenkonstruktion auf, um die vier Acrylplatten von je 1000×1000 mm zu halten, und machte mich an die Arbeit. Da ich hinter dem Plexiglas arbeitete (die Farben sind viel brillanter, und die Oberfläche bleibt geschützt) und viel Maskierungsarbeit zu leisten hatte, hatte ich keine Ahnung, was mit dem Gemälde geschah, bis ich fertig war und es vom Gerüst abgenommen hatte. Ich war überrascht und ziemlich glücklich. Seitdem habe ich eine Reihe großer Werke gemalt. Kürzlich kombiniere ich Plexiglas mit Schlagmetall und Epoxidharz. Ich war noch nie so begeistert.
METALLIC
Ten years ago, in 2013, I was stricken with „gold fever “. On that day, I realized I had to learn how to apply gold leaf. And I had to learn it immediately. I was advised to try something else. For gold leaf, a three-year-long course of study was necessary. Forget that! Instead, I ordered everything I needed from the internet and got started three days later, using YouTube videos and various books on the subject. I should have listened to the experts, but I rarely do. I did it the hard way. By the time I was finished, I had used about ½ a kilo of the stuff, was totally frustrated, and thought, this can’t be the future”. Somewhere along the way, I switched to compositions gold (Schlagmetall) and suddenly it was fun. Since then I have never looked back.
Vor zehn Jahren, im Jahr 2013, wurde ich vom „Goldfieber“ befallen. An diesem Tag wurde mir klar, dass ich das lernen musste, wie man Blattgold aufträgt. Und ich musste es sofort lernen. Mir wurde geraten, etwas anderes auszuprobieren. Für Blattgold, ein dreijähriger Studiengang wäre notwendig. Diese Überlegung habe ich sofort verworfen! Stattdessen bestellte ich alles was ich brauchte aus dem Internet und fing drei Tage später an mit YouTube-Videos und verschiedenen Büchern zum Thema. Ich hätte auf die Experten hören sollen, aber ich höre selten auf sie. Ich habe es getan auf die harte Tour. Als ich fertig war, hatte ich etwa ½ Kilo von dem Zeug verbraucht, war total frustriert und dachte nach. „Das kann nicht die Zukunft sein“. Irgendwann wechselte ich zu Kompositionen Gold (Schlagmetall) und plötzlich machte es Spaß. Seitdem habe ich nie wieder zurückgeblickt.
PAINTINGS WITH EPOXY RESIN
I began using epoxy resin to laminate my acrylic paintings about five years ago. I am sure I watched every YouTube video there was twice to get the hang of it. I used heat guns and acetone and plastic straws to help remove the bubbles that developed during the drying phase, but nothing helped. I became embittered, infuriated and exasperated! I went through many litres of the stuff until I finally learned how to go about it. And it was worth it. Painting with epoxy resin alone is a joy. I am now combining epoxy resin and compositions gold and acrylic paint together and my world just seems to get bigger and bigger.
Vor etwa 5 Jahren begann ich, meine Acrylbilder mit Epoxidharz zu laminieren. Ich bin sicher, dass ich mir jedes YouTube-Video zweimal angesehen habe, um den Dreh herauszufinden. Ich benutzte Heißluftpistolen und Aceton- und Plastikstrohhalme, um die Blasen zu entfernen, die während der Trocknungsphase entstanden, aber nichts half. Ich wurde verbittert, wütend und verärgert! Ich machte viele Liter des Stoffes durch, bis ich endlich lernte, wie man es macht. Und es hat sich gelohnt. Allein das Malen mit Epoxidharz ist eine Freude. Ich kombiniere jetzt Epoxidharz und Kompositionen aus Gold und Acrylfarbe miteinander, und es kommt mir vor, als würde meine Welt immer größer und größer werden.
